Become a National Health Service Corps Site

Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics, and other sites that care for low-income and uninsured individuals are eligible to become National Health Service Corps (NHSC) approved sites. Primary care physicians, dentists, dental hygienists, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, and mental health professionals who are eligible for loan repayment or who have received NHSC scholarships can fulfill their service obligation at the approved NHSC sites.

Other Loan Repayment and Scholarship Opportunities

Loan Repayment Opportunities and Resources

  • Wyoming Healthcare Provider Loan Repayment Program - Wyoming offers this program in two categories: physician and dentist; and Allied Healthcare professionals.
  • Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program - NELRP is a competitive program that repays 60 percent of the qualifying loan balance of registered nurses selected for funding in exchange for 2 years of service at a critical shortage facility. Participants may be eligible to work a third year and receive an additional 25 percent of the qualifying loan balance. Authorized by Section 846 of the Public Health Service Act, as amended, the purpose of the NELRP is to assist in the recruitment and retention of professional nurses dedicated to providing health care to underserved populations.
  • Loan Forgiveness for Public Service Employees - This program will pay off remainder of debt after 10 years of payments for a multitude of public service professions.
  • Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program - The Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program (IHSLRP) offers health care professionals the opportunity to lighten qualified student loan debts and help IHS meet the staffing needs of Indian health programs. It is open to health professionals who will commit to working in health facilities serving American Indians and Alaska Natives for a minimum two-year service obligation.
  • Faculty Loan Repayment Program (FLRP) - FLRP provides financial incentive for degree-trained health professionals to pursue academic careers. If selected, you must agree to serve on the faculty of an accredited health professions school for a minimum of two years. In return, the Federal government agrees to pay, for each year of faculty service, up to $20,000 of the outstanding principal and interest on the participant's educational loans.
  • National Institute of Health (NIH) Loan Repayment Program - This program aims to attract health professionals to careers in clinical, pediatric, health disparity, or contraceptive and infertility research.

Health Care Scholarship Opportunities and Resources

  • Health Workforce Information Center - 138 medical scholarships, many are nationwide.  
  • National Health Service Corps - In exchange for 2 to 4 years of service in an NHSC-approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area of greatest need: Tuition, fees, other reasonable educational costs and living stipend; for students in training to become primary care physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives or physician assistants 
  • HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program - Participants who sign "Full-Time Student" Contracts incur one (1) year of full-time obligated service for each full or partial school year of support received, with a minimum 2-year full-time service obligation. For example, a student who receives a full year of support (12 months) the first school year, a partial year of support (6 months) the second school year, and a full year of support the third school year will owe the equivalent of 3 years of full-time clinical service.  Participants who sign “Part-Time Student” Contracts incur a 2-year service obligation or the part-time equivalent of one year for each school  year the participant receives a scholarship, whichever is greater.
  • Perkins Loans - The federal government will pay-off the Perkins loan amount if the individual works in identified healthcare fields for a specified amount of time.
  • WWAMI - Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho Medical School program
  • WyIN - Wyoming Investment in Nursing.  This program is coordinated at college student aid offices in Wyoming.  The funds are to assist with nurse educational expenses as determined by the financial aid office at each academic institution.
  • AfterCollege/AACN Nursing Scholarship Fund - Application deadline: Applications accepted on an ongoing basis.  This scholarship program supports students who are seeking a baccalaureate, masters or doctoral degree in nursing.
  • WICHE - Allows Wyoming citizens to receive in-state tuition when obtaining medical education out of state in programs not available in Wyoming.
  • University of Wyoming Scholarship Book - Lists scholarships available throughout Wyoming and federal programs.  Not all are healthcare oriented.
  • University of Wyoming Scholarship information - Scholarships available at UW and other financial aid information.  Not all are healthcare oriented.
  • Wyoming Community Foundation - Information on various scholarships available to Wyoming high school graduates, including healthcare scholarships.
  • Hospital Foundation scholarship programs - Some hospitals offer scholarships in hard to fill medical professions in exchange for working in that hospital after graduation.  Check with the various hospitals in your area. 
  • Professional Organizations - Many national and state professional organizations offer scholarships for education in their professions.  Check the professional organization websites for specific details on what each offers.

  • Indian Health Service Scholarship Program - The Indian Health Service Scholarship Program offers American Indian/Alaska Native students three different scholarship options.
  • A Nurse I Am Scholarship Program - Watch a video and write an essay.
  • Lydia's Professional Uniforms and American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Scholarship for Baccalaureate Students - WASHINGTON, DC - Lydia's Professional Uniforms, a leading supplier of apparel for health professionals, is partnering with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to launch a new scholarship program for nurses enrolled in baccalaureate programs. Through this partnership, Lydia's will provide $5,000 in competitive scholarship monies each semester to eligible nursing students.
  • American Dental Association - Scholarships for Dental Students, Minority Dental Students, Dental Hygiene, Dental Assistant, and Dental Laboratory Technology.
